Winter Skincare Rituals
Winter—not only does the drop to ice-cold temperatures affect our social lives and put us into hibernation, it also takes a toll on our skin. With the ultimate goal being glowy and hydrated skin, dry and flakey just won’t cut it. Due to this, most make a change in their skin care routine. I’m going to break down my tried and trues to keep healthy, radiant skin.
I wash my face twice a day, morning and night. In the mornings, I usually use Purpose Cleansing Wash to start with a fresh face. This is a drugstore find—it is SO gentle on skin, clinically proven to be as gentle as water, and even won an Allure best of beauty award.
When I’m traveling, which is often, I usually bring my carry-on size of Clinique Liquid Facial Soap.
On days that need exfoliating, I use Murad’s Pore Rescue.
For those nights you’re too lazy to take your makeup off… Neutrogena Makeup Remover Towelettes have always been my go to. I mean, even Kim K can vouch for me. If you’re feeling fancy, the Night Calming version feels so soothing.
Now for moisturizing. Your skin has different needs from day versus night, so you should be switching up your products. During the day, I try to stick with something lightweight. Living in Chicago and being exposed to city pollutants, SPF is key (well actually, SPF is key anywhere). This Trish McEvoy cream with SPF 30 is light enough to wear underneath makeup and has little to no sunscreen scent.
I love a creamy eye moisturizer for daytime, because it makes it super smooth to apply concealer afterwards. Clinique’s All About Eyes feels like a fluffy cloud of perfection. And if you’re trying to hide dark circles like me, this is an essential.
The evening is usually when your skin needs an added boost. While you’re sleeping, skin goes into “repair mode”, regenerating itself and better absorbing any topical treatments—turns out beauty sleep isn’t just a myth. Take advantage of this time by using your most coveted products. After I wash my face, I love Fresh’s Rose Hydration Toner—it takes off every single trace of makeup left behind, and doesn’t leave your skin feeling stripped.
Since I’m in my early 20’s, I’m all about preventing aging. Two noteworthy products are Trish McEvoy’s Eye Serum and Kate Somerville’s Retinol Eye Cream. The eyes are the first to show signs of aging, so eye products are the place to first splurge.
Clinique Moisture Surge is like crack—you can feel it immediately soak into your skin and really hydrate! Lather this all over the face.
Lastly, I top my nightly skin care off with a face oil. This is proven to “lock in”, per se, all the prior skin care used for the night. Mario Badescu Rose Hip Oil is a favorite, or I even love Bio-Oil—an affordable anti-aging product that has multiple uses.
No one wants to kiss crusty, chapped lips, so keep your lips hydrated! Use Bliss Fabulips Sugar Scrub to get rid of any cracks or flakes, and then top with your favorite lip balm (Rosebud Salve, for me).
When your skin needs some extra love, masks are my favvvvvvorite. Lancome Hydra-Intense for extra moisturizing, Glamglow Supermud for clearing pores and Estee Lauder Eye Masks to brighten are my top three. Last tip: Mario Badescu’s Drying Lotion and Peter Thomas Roth’s Invisible Dots are prime for spot treating breakouts.
On my list to try:
Enjoy! xo, Mackenzie
